Out in nature. All alone. Hearing nothing but the wind, birdsong, water lapping. Seeing nothing but forest, pasture, waves. Feeling nothing but the cool wind or a warm sunbeam, breaking through the leafy canopy. This is the essence of nature photography for me. And it’s not primarily about taking good photos, but about grounding yourself, reflecting on yourself and escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life for the moment. That’s why nature photography is the genre, that i am most often photographing in.
In this category there are some rather arbitrarily chosen subthemes. These include landscape photography, wildlife photography, macros, and conservational photography. They are arbitrarily chosen because I rarely go out and say, „Today I’m going to take a cool landscape photo and if I see a deer in between, then that’s just not going to be photographed!“ Usually several topics fit to one posting, so the posting will be listed in several different categories. The unpredictability in nature photography is its biggest advantage and disadvantage at the same time. You can plan as much as you want. In the end you will see what motif presents itself to you and this moment of surprise is what makes nature photography so satisfying.
Climb up on some hill at sunrise. Everybody needs perspective once in a while, and you’ll find it there.
